The Cisco Catalyst 3750-X Series is a line of stackable enterprise-class access switches available in 24-port and 48-port Gigabit Ethernet variants. Unlike the standalone 3560-X, the 3750-X supports StackWise Plus — a 64 Gbps stacking backplane that allows up to 9 switches to operate as a single logical unit with shared management, power, and uplink modules. This makes the 3750-X ideal for campus access stacks and distributed wiring-closet deployments.

The 3750-X uses the same three-tier IOS licensing model as the 3560-X: LAN Base → IP Base → IP Services. The switch hardware is identical across tiers — only the installed license file determines which features are active. Upgrades are permanent right-to-use (RTU) — pay once, reload the switch, and you're on the new tier permanently.

What's the difference between 3750-X and 3560-X licensing?

The license tiers and upgrade paths are identical — both platforms use LAN Base → IP Base → IP Services. The key differences are the license SKUs (3750-X SKUs use L-C3750X- prefix, 3560-X uses L-C3560X-) and the hardware capabilities:

  • 3750-X — Stackable via StackWise Plus (64 Gbps, up to 9 members). Optional redundant power supplies. Supports optional network modules (10GE SFP+, Service Module).
  • 3560-X — Standalone only (no stacking). Same port densities and feature tiers, designed for single-switch deployments.

3750-X licenses cannot be applied to 3560-X switches and vice versa — the UDI binding prevents cross-platform activation.

Can I upgrade directly from LAN Base to IP Services?

Yes! The L-C3750X-[24/48]-L-E license takes you from LAN Base directly to IP Services in a single step. At $20, this is more cost-effective than buying two sequential upgrades (L→S at $20 + S→E at $20 = $40). If you know you need full routing (OSPF/BGP/MPLS), choose the L-E path directly. This single-step upgrade is available for both 24-port and 48-port models.

Do I need separate licenses for each switch in a 3750-X stack?

Yes. Each switch in a StackWise Plus stack is an independent physical unit with its own UDI — and each needs its own license. If you have a 4-member stack running LAN Base and want to upgrade all of them to IP Services, you need 4 separate license keys (one per switch UDI). However, the stack master handles all L3 processing, so in practice:

  • Only the stack master needs IP Services for L3 routing to work stack-wide.
  • Member switches can stay on LAN Base or IP Base if they're only providing L2 access ports.

This means you can selectively upgrade only the master (or master + standby) to IP Services, saving cost on pure L2 member switches.

How quickly will I receive my 3750-X license after purchase?
