What is the licensing model for Cisco ASR 901 and ASR 920 routers?
Both platforms use Cisco's right-to-use (RTU) licensing model with e-delivery. However, the license structure differs:
ASR 901 — Feature-based + port activation licensing. You purchase individual feature licenses (Base, IP Security, Advanced Metro IP, Timing) and port upgrade licenses (4×GE, 2×10GE) separately.
ASR 920 — Tiered Metro IP Access licensing (I → M → A). Each tier is hierarchical — Advanced includes all features from Metro Access Services, which includes all features from Metro IP Access.
All licenses are perpetual — no Smart Account, no CSSM, no annual renewal.
Are ASR 901 feature licenses hierarchical like ASR 1000?
No. Unlike the ASR 1000's strict IPB→AIS→AES→SEC→AppX hierarchy, ASR 901 feature licenses are independent and additive. You need the Base license (L-SL-A901-B) as the foundation, but after that, you can add individual features as needed — IP Security (L-SL-A901-I) for VPN backhaul, Advanced Metro IP (L-SL-A901-A) for MPLS services, or Advanced Timing (L-SL-A901-T) for SyncE/1588v2 — without buying intermediate tiers.
How do ASR 901 port upgrade licenses work?
ASR 901 port upgrade licenses activate pre-installed physical ports on the router. The hardware ships with the interfaces, but they remain inactive until the corresponding license is installed. Key points:
L-FLS-A901-4 — Activates 4 combo GE ports (supports both copper RJ45 and SFP)
L-FLS-A901-4T — Activates 4 copper-only GE ports (RJ45)
L-FLS-A901-4S — Activates 4 fiber-only GE ports (SFP slots)

What tier of ASR 920 Metro IP Access do I need?

Metro Access Services (M) — L-ASR920-S-M: MPLS to the edge. Choose this if you need VPLS/VPWS, MPLS-TE, or L2VPN service delivery from the access layer.
Advanced Metro IP Access (A) — L-ASR920-S-A: Full L2+L3 service edge. Choose this for BGP L3VPN, HQoS, and full MPLS PE functionality — essentially turning the ASR 920 into a compact service-edge router.
