Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Routers are carrier-grade platforms running IOS XR, designed for service provider core, edge, and aggregation networks. Models include the modular ASR 9006, ASR 9010, ASR 9904, ASR 9906, ASR 9910, ASR 9912, and ASR 9922 chassis, supporting a wide range of Ethernet line cards from 1GE to 100GE. For smaller deployments, see our ISR 4000 router licenses and 1900/2900/3900 licenses.

ASR 9000 licensing uses Cisco's Advanced IP (AIP) right-to-use model. The base AIP license enables foundational IP/MPLS features. Two upgrade tiers — AIP Transport and AIP Service Edge — unlock advanced MPLS, Carrier Ethernet, and service-edge capabilities. Capacity-based AIP licenses are applied per line card or per chassis slot, allowing operators to license only the bandwidth they need.

This collection covers all ASR 9000 license types: AIP software tiers, line-card capacity licenses (40G through 400G and per-port-type), subscriber services (BNG, CGN, NAT64, DSLite), and specialty licenses (Video, Optical, Infrastructure VRF). All licenses are delivered electronically within 24 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions — ASR 9000 Licensing

What is the Cisco ASR 9000 AIP licensing model?

Cisco ASR 9000 uses the Advanced IP (AIP) right-to-use (RTU) licensing model. It has three hierarchical software tiers:

  • AIP Base — Foundation with IP routing (BGP/OSPF/IS-IS), MPLS LDP, QoS, NetFlow. Required for all ASR 9000 deployments.
  • AIP Transport — Adds MPLS-TE, L2VPN/L3VPN, VPLS, Carrier Ethernet (E-Line/E-LAN/E-Tree), Seamless MPLS.
  • AIP Service Edge — Adds HQoS, BNG subscriber management, CGN/NAT44, NAT64, DSLite, Video monitoring, IPSec.

Each higher tier includes all features from lower tiers. Licenses are applied either platform-wide (AIP Base) or per-line-card / per-capacity-slot (Transport and Service Edge).

Do I need AIP Base before upgrading to Transport or Service Edge?

Yes. AIP Base (A9K-AIP-LIC-B) is the mandatory foundation license for every ASR 9000 chassis. It enables core IP/MPLS features and is required before Transport or Service Edge licenses can be activated. Think of it as the "operating system license" — without it, no advanced features will work.

How are line card capacity licenses applied on ASR 9000?

Capacity-based AIP licenses (40G, 80G, 160G, 400G) are applied per slot or per line card, not per-port. For example:

  • A 24-port 10GE line card at full throughput handles 240 Gbps — you'd need a 400G capacity license to cover it at line rate.
  • A single 100GE port would need a 160G capacity license (next tier above 100 Gbps).
  • The capacity you license is the maximum throughput the line card can process, regardless of how many ports are connected.

Alternatively, some line cards have type-specific licenses (e.g., A9K-24P10G-AIP-SE) that license the full card without separate capacity selection.

What's the difference between CGN, NAT64, and Dual-Stack Lite on ASR 9000?

All three are carrier-grade address translation services running on ASR 9000 with AIP Service Edge. The key differences:

  • CGN (NAT44) — Translates private IPv4 to public IPv4. Used by ISPs to conserve IPv4 addresses. Supports 5 million concurrent sessions per license.
  • NAT64 — Translates IPv6 to IPv4. Enables IPv6-only client networks to reach IPv4-only internet content. Stateful translation with 5M sessions.
  • Dual-Stack Lite (DS-Lite) — Tunnels IPv4 traffic over an IPv6 access network (IPv4-in-IPv6 softwire). The ASR 9000 acts as the AFTR concentrator. 5M sessions.

Choose CGN for IPv4 conservation, NAT64 for IPv6-only deployments, and DS-Lite when your access network is IPv6 but subscribers still need IPv4 reachability.
